The third task of management is managing the social impacts and the social responsibilities of the enterprise. None of our institutions exists by itself and as an end in itself. Every one is an organ of society and exists for the sake of society. Business is no exception. “Free enterprise” means but not ends. The hospital exists not for the sake of doctors and nurses, but for the sake of the patients whose one and only desire is to leave the hospital cured and never come back. The school exists not for the sake of teachers, but for the students.（医院的存在不是为了医生和护士，但是为了病人，那些渴望治愈离院再也不用回来的人。同样学校也不是为了老师，而是为了学生。）For a management to forget this is mismanagement. （对于管理来说忘记这一点就是乱管。）

To discharge its job, to produce economic goods and services, the business enterprise has to have impacts on people, on communities, and on society. It has to have power and authority over people, for example, employees, whose own ends and purposes are not defined by and within the enterprise. It has to have impact on the community as a neighbor, as the source of jobs and tax revenue but also of waste products and pollutants. And, increasingly, in our pluralist society of organizations, it has to add to its fundamental concern for the quantities of life (economic goods and services), for the physical, human, and social environment of modern man and modern community. （工商企业必须对社区有所交代，他是一个邻居，工作与税收的来源，也是废弃产品与污染的来源。同时，在多元化社会组织中，她必须日益加强对社会生活的品质：经济产品和服务的关注，对物质的，人类的，现代社会环境的关注。）

在Drucker先生的朴实论述中，社会责任不是一句高调，不是一句道德训诫，不是慈善家的专利，不是仓廪实而后知道的礼节，而是社会组织，无论商业还是非营利性的组织自身存在必须的一种功能。

中国教育和医疗的改革的大失败从管理角度来看是完全倒置了组织的使命的后果。风气一旦形成，所有的组织都无法幸免。当然商业企业接二连三出现的食品安全和产品质量问题则不足为怪。实践证明，商业组织忽略甚至摒弃了自己的社会责任一味追求利润本身是十分错误的。三鹿本来是一个不错的品牌，但由于全部乳制品行业全部忽略自己的社会责任（提供健康的无毒的有牛奶应该有的营养的奶粉），当国际社会的压力过大时，三鹿就成为中国乳制品行业丢车保帅的替罪羔羊。另外的一个极端的例子是美国的安然和中国的国美，他们的掌门人过分沉醉于资本市场的淘金，而忘记一个公司存在根本意义。

办公室楼下的田子坊里面有一个叫Dan的咖啡馆，跟其他在田子坊里面半死不活的商店和饭店相比，生意一天比一天好。原因是显而易见的，因为老板夫妻两个是真心的要做好咖啡，一楼的制作咖啡的场地简直是一个咖啡博物馆，老板亲自操作，老板娘有空也是认真的看关于咖啡方面的书籍。Dan咖啡没有把赚钱放在第一位，而是把服务客户放在第一位，专业放在第一位，小小的咖啡店，古香古色，一尘不染，小小的窗台外绿意盎然。今天下午Jacqueline和Cathy就又去喝了5杯咖啡，而且店内一直顾客盈门。我没有做过大企业，但从小企业的发展中能够看到Drucker管理学的经典之处。
